Great idea! It could be like the tour divide with more of an environmental message. Make it a race and you will get more media attention. It could draw lots of mtb's and cyclecross riders form the bay area and from here(Redding). Get in touch with local shops and clubs. My neighbor works for the water board and is a cyclist.

Ray,

Great question, we'll get clearer about what WM is offering on the Sojourn. Simply put, the WM team will be another bunch of riders on tour. Our intention is to enjoy the ride just like everyone else and to bring our best qualities and skills to the group. We want people to feel responsible for themselves, and we hope to help out when people need it.

The big difference however is we're making sure things go smoothly before, during and after the ride for everyone out there. Coordinating return trips, securing campgrounds, SAG vehicles, routing, and attracting quality people is what we do.

Out on the road, WM will be there insuring riders get help with mechanical problems, learn good touring habits, and never fall off the back of the ride. We sweep the whole thing. If you sign up we'll put you and your son on the Sojourn's group email list to get you on a return plan and set up with SAG vehicles, should you not want to carry your whole kit.

We offer the sliding scale as a chance for people to support our work, to give what they can and to decide what the Sojourn is worth to them. We're not going to treat anyone differently over this. Maybe due to your bike, but not over money.

One thing: this ride gets kinda tough. We wouldn't say yawl can't do it, but it's not easy. If you decide to ride we'd encourage outings and overnights on your rig. You'll have more fun if you're bike fit. Simple science but it's got to be said.

The WM community (and the Sojourn in particular) is a great place to gain bicycle touring experience. You'll come away feeling confident in your abilities to tour solo and know what it's like to tour in a group. Both experiences are very rewarding for very different reasons.

Thanks again for your question and I hope this clears things up.

Keep riding,
Ryan

My 17 year old son and I are planning our first tour. Looking over your information it seems like its pretty simple and should be fun. Since this appears to be very DIY and self supportive, the question I have is what will the $300 - $600 get my son and I for this four day venture?
Thanks,
Ray
