My suggestion is we ally our worries for the next 14 days while remaining vigilant of the Big Sur fires and move forward with enthusiasm. Then, make a timely and well informed decision as we reach the Bay Area on July 25th.
I think it's too early to tell.
My humble gratitude goes to the thousands of fire and medical crews that have been securing the forest fires across California. Additionally, my deep condolences to all who have experienced loss and hardship though the months of fire and smoke.
If Wheeled Migration must alter its course in response to the changing conditions of our world, it will pale in comparison to those who have already done so.
It is my prayer that these difficult events will somehow bring each of us closer to our world and one another with fresh sensibilities and compassion.
I believe there is no alternate route...SOOOO remember to pack a bathing suit because we may be hanging out on the coast for the week rather than attending the SLO conference.
But keep an eye out on the Caltrans website, they have updates on all road conditions.
I have taken a different route on the way back from SLO. Earlier this spring I took the normal route back to Morro Bay, then turned east on Old Creek Road, went through the wine country, past Lake Nacimiento and Lake San Antonio, through the military reservation, and ended up in King City. From there I pedaled into a headwind at a blistering pace of about 8 mph for the next five hours. I ended up on River Rd, heading north past arroyo seco and finally got back to the coast near moss landing.
So it's totally do-able, but let's not plan on it. =)
Thanks for bringing this up, Amelia (nice to meet you :o)
Fires inspiring bad air quality in the Chico area are also an issue, and a few of us are getting together to entertain thoughts about it, either this eve or tomorrow afternoon.
The space here is filled with varied amounts of ...
presence
wonder
worry
possibility
aliveness
uncertainty
annoyance
All fun toys to play with in this luscious human existence!
